Steel, 2023. aprox. 65" x 35" x 35" (variable).
Circulation resulted from a project in class inspired by matrixes and patterns. The process required plasma cutting, metal bending, MIG welding, and heat painting. The carefully unbalanced weight of the steel structure causes the piece to continually wind and unwind. My design process was motivated by archaeology and early human mark-making. Spirals are a symbol found in cave paintings and on objects from Asia to Europe to the Southern tip of Africa. Although there are over a dozen of these symbols that appear across time and space, I chose spirals because of an aesthetic preference and the variety of meanings deduced from their usage. Spirals refer to water, rituals, rebirth, and countless more things that we may never know.
